PROVIRID represents a promising research initiative addressing one of the most significant public health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. By exploring indigenous medicinal plants of Eastern Uganda for their potential as Latency Reversing Agents (LRAs), this research aims to develop locally relevant therapeutic innovations for HIV/AIDS. The project contributes to the global search for an HIV cure while promoting the utilization of Uganda's rich biodiversity for health solutions.
HIV/AIDS remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Although Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) has significantly improved the quality of life and extended the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS, the disease still has no definitive cure and an effective vaccine remains unavailable. Hidden viral reservoirs continue to pose a significant challenge to complete eradication of the virus.

Prostratin, a naturally occurring compound, is one such LRA and has previously been isolated from plants found in the temperate regions of the Western world. In response to the need for locally relevant therapeutic innovations, PROVIRID has been developed as a herbal remedy derived from indigenous medicinal plants of Eastern Uganda.
